Methuen Book Buddies Is Coming to Tenney School!

A book. A letter. A connection that lasts.

The Methuen Literacy Partnership is excited to launch Methuen Book Buddies at the Tenney School during the 2026–2027 school year.

We are inviting caring adults from across our community to become Book Buddies for Tenney third graders. Together, we can help children feel encouraged, seen, and excited about reading.

One caring adult can make reading feel personal.

What is Book Buddies?

Book Buddies is a school-year literacy and pen-pal program that matches a third-grade student with an adult volunteer in the community. Each Book Buddy sends their student buddy three new books and three handwritten letters during the school year. Students write back after each exchange.

Books are gifts for students to keep. Letters give students a chance to practice writing while building a positive connection to reading and to a caring member of their community.

All exchanges take place through letters—similar to a traditional pen-pal experience. Book Buddies and students do not meet in person. The Methuen Literacy Partnership manages matching, communications, screening, sorting, and classroom delivery.

Is this for you?

You do not need experience—just a love of reading and the ability to make a school-year commitment. As a Book Buddy, you will be matched with one Tenney third grader and receive information about their interests and reading level. The commitment includes purchasing three new books and one journal, writing three letters, and meeting three drop-off deadlines.

Be the person who helps a child say:

“This book was chosen just for me!”
